The Dark Knight Arrives!
I was a big fan of Frank Miller's twisted Batman tale THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and remember eagerly buying all four issues! With me being a big Batman fan it was one of those great comic book moments! It is not the ultimate Batman story to me, but I thought it was really an engaging one. Something about a bitter older Batman trying to work through some of his issues while dealing with a battered Gotham city of the future appealed to me at that time. Yes this Batman tale may seem a bit dated now with some of it's story elements and a bit over the top with other elements, yet I still like the Two-Face/Joker stories and how they wrapped up mixed in with the satire. As for the Batman/Superman conflict it was fun to see those two characters differences played out!
Flash forward to the present an animated adaption of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS has been produced and the first part was released this week. This image below I had started to create for a contest connected to the release of the DVD. I got side tracked with work and did not make the deadline, but decided to finish it up anyways. The image was created by drawing over a pencil rough in Illustrator. I looked at many pages of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS comics to get inspired when creating this and decided to create my own take on the scene from the junkyard where Batman and Robin take on some mutant gang members. So that is it in a long winded nutshell and I have heard rumors there was a sequel to THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. I hope it is a rumor as I think the TDKR story ends just right, but that is just my opinion.

Happy Twenty Year Anniversary BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES!
It
was twenty years ago today I think one of the better versions of a
televised/motion story version of BATMAN debuted on TV. It was BATMAN
THE ANIMATED SERIES. Creative types like Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski,
Paul Dini, etc. did such a great job in putting this show together! In
addition actor Kevin Conroy really gave us a fully realized BATMAN with
his voice work! Also other actors like Mark Hamill,
etc. did excellent voice acting on characters like the Joker, along
with other classic and new characters in this BATMAN universe! BMTAS had
a perfect mix of crime/film noir style, mood, adventure, drama, and
dark humor all in a kid's show if you can believe that! I could not
resist in creating an image of BATMAN in Illustrator of the style of
Bruce Timm who set the visual look of the show.

Was I Ahead Of The Curve?! ;)
POSSIBLE SPOILER PLOT POINT IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE EPISODE OF THE NEW BLACK DYNAMITE CARTOON SERIES...Here it is to watch 'Just Beat It Or Jackson Five Across Yo' Eyes'
Okay now that I have that out of the way the other day I finally got around to watching the new BLACK DYNAMITE animated series on Adult Swim. It is based off the movie of the same name that came out a few years ago. The series and film is a homage with comedy elements of the Blacksploitation films from the 1970's era. Anyway this episode dealt with the 70's era Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 with a few later elements of Michael Jackson's career thrown in the mix. In the episode we find out Michael is an alien creature adopted by the Jackson parents who disguise him as a human which was the Michael Jackson look of the 70's. Well back in 1992 for a SF Bay Guardian Cartoon Contest I created this cartoon below. I believe it was also blown up and shown in the Cartoon Art Museum gallery at the time of the contest. Now I don't claim this as a totally original idea and I am sure other creators thought of this as Michael evolved with his look at the time, I just never came across those similar ideas till now. If I did see this idea earlier I also may of forgotten about it as I see so much cartoon/parody material!;) Anyways here is my cartoon MOON WALKER below and it is pretty simple and straight forward in the idea.

Sketch Tuesday Drawings June 2012
I participated in the June Sketch Tuesday last night and had fun as usual. This ST was better in sales for me than the others in the first quarter of this year, so it was all good. Two of my drawings I sold I forgot to take pictures of. The ones posted here I still have for sale at $15.00 each and the bottom robot image was another one I sold that I did take a picture of. They are all ink drawings on card stock 6.08 x 7 inches.

TURN Storyboards
Posted here are some storyboards I did last month for Gyro an Ad/Media Agency in San Francisco that I do work for on occasion. The storyboards were for a live action 30 second ad that was filmed recently and aired during the 2012 season finale of MAD MEN on AMC. Here is a link to it...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUlt6vo6w_w I actually had time to color these storyboards which is something I rarely do and it is always fun to see how closely the director follows them. I don't expect them to really be followed all that closely seeing many a time storyboards are used as a springboard of sorts for planning and setting up shots. I have storyboarded two short films and many other live commercials in the past decade or so.

May Sketch Tuesday Drawings
I participated in the May Sketch Tuesday last night and had fun. I produced 10 drawings and sold one of them. I am posting the images of the drawings here. Like all my original art it is for sale so if you are interested in it just contact me. These drawings are ink/water color on card stock 6.08 x 7 inches and all run for $15.00 each. I sort of went with a theme of sorts with these drawings. Although I did create two robots and the depressed Marvin one with the word balloon was a commission I sold. I took a picture of it with my phone so it is not as sharp as the other images.
